COLORADO

What's going on in my state?

To date, 923 Colorado teachers have achieved National Board Certification. Colorado has traditionally recognized National Board Certification through the state’s three-tiered licensure system.

What are the benefits of being an NBCT in my state?

Master Teacher
Colorado teachers who hold a professional license and achieve National Board Certification are eligible for Master Teacher certification, which extends the term for state license renewal from five to seven years. Additionally, professional development activities related to National Board Certification may be used for license renewal. For new Colorado educators, a valid National Board certificate is accepted for reciprocity to issue a Colorado Professional License provided certain requirements are met. For more information, please visit the Colorado Department of Education website.

Financial Incentives
During the 2012-13 legislative session, Colorado lawmakers established a stipend of $1,600 for educators who hold a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. An additional $3,200 was added for educators employed in high-need schools, for a total stipend of $4,800 for NBCTs who teach in Priority Improvement Plan or Turnaround Plan schools. All stipends are subject to availability of funding and annual legislative approval.

What support is available?

Fee Support
Some school districts use Title monies and/or professional development funds to provide fee support to candidates seeking certification. For information about local school district fee support, please view the Colorado local incentives document.

Candidate Support
Candidate support is often available from professional organizations, universities, and regional professional development centers. A number of school districts provide local support for their teachers seeking National Board Certification. Please inquire with an NBCT you may know, your school principal or your state teachers association to see if there is a candidate support program near you.
